Downtown Silver Spring New Restaurants: Fall 2026 Openings

October 15, 2026

At 8455 Fenton Street, in the space El Sapo Cuban Social Club left in late 2024, Easy Like Sunday opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. every day of the week. A few blocks west, the Yirgacheffe Coffee cart at the Amoco on the corner of Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue opens at 6:30 a.m. on weekdays and also closes at 3. Those two schedules describe most of downtown's openings since July. Nearly all of them are built for breakfast and the early afternoon. Over the same months, two of the biggest rooms that used to fill after dark went on the leasing market.

What opened, and when its doors are open

Here is what has opened downtown since early July, according to reporting by Source of the Spring and Bethesda Magazine:

Business Address What it replaced Hours or format
Shah's Halal Food 8517 Colesville Rd. Jerry's Subs and Pizza Not yet posted; other area locations run 10 a.m. to midnight or later
Easy Like Sunday 8455 Fenton St. El Sapo Cuban Social Club 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
Buna & Barley 901 Silver Spring Ave. Wesenyelesh International Market Soft open, limited hours
Yirgacheffe Coffee 8600 Georgia Ave. New cart at the Amoco 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends
Kellem Coffee Commas, Ellsworth Place, third level New vendor Ethiopian coffee, breakfast, East African dishes

Three of the five are coffee-first. Two are Ethiopian coffee businesses that opened within weeks of each other, and Source of the Spring's write-up on the Yirgacheffe cart links straight back to its Buna & Barley story. On the Commas vendor page, Kellem is an Ethiopian coffee café serving breakfast staples, muffins and scones next to chechebsa, ful and samosas. Easy Like Sunday is a full-bar brunch restaurant that chose to close mid-afternoon. As Source of the Spring recounted, co-owner Antonios Kokolis told Bethesda Magazine in March that the team wanted families to feel comfortable even with the bar.

Buna & Barley opened with a statement of what it wants to be. Source of the Spring reprinted it from the store's Instagram:

In Ethiopia, the neighborhood store is more than a place to shop. It's where coffee is poured. Where news is shared. Where familiar faces cross paths. Where the game is always on.

The shop sells Ethiopian specialties and snacks, grab-and-go meals, and a curated selection of beer and wine. It works more like a daytime corner store you stop into on the way somewhere than a place you plan an evening around.

The rooms built for nights went dark

The other side of the summer shows up in what closed or went up for lease. On August 28, Source of the Spring reported three changes at once:

  • Solaire Social, 8200 Dixon Ave. Downtown's first food hall closed abruptly last fall after 17 months. The 13,000-square-foot space, which still holds $1.5 million in kitchen equipment, is being marketed for lease.
  • Black Diamond Restaurant & Lounge, Ramsey Ave. The two-floor, 4,000-square-foot Afro-fusion restaurant and lounge across from the Silver Spring Transit Center is permanently closed. It opened in early 2023 in a space that 8407 Kitchen Bar and then Tacos, Tortas & Tequila had held before it.
  • Lamoon Thai, Thayer Ave. The restaurant has been listed for sale. It has not been reported closed.

The Ramsey Avenue address has now turned over three times since 2017. Nips Juice House also left its Cameron Street storefront after five years. It is moving into Commas, but as of the food hall's September 26 reopening it was still waiting on county permits.

Commas shows the pattern at small scale

Commas, on the third level of Ellsworth Place, has been through every part of this story in its first year. The mall came under new management in 2026 after its previous owner, GBT Realty, fell delinquent on a $69 million loan. TJ Maxx and TD Bank both left earlier this year. Tokoa Cheesesteaks and Tato's closed in June while vendor agreements were reworked under the new ownership.

Bethesda Magazine reported that the hall held its reopening on Saturday, September 26. Kellem Coffee was open that day, and Nips was not yet. DMV Furniture Outlet has also opened a second showroom in the old TJ Maxx space. The 450-unit residential tower that was approved above the mall in 2024 has an unclear status. So the newest tenant at Ellsworth Place is a coffee counter serving breakfast.

The new outdoor room is also a daylight one

On September 18, Montgomery Parks cut the ribbon on Bottleworks Lane Park at 1110 East-West Highway. A County Council bulletin on October 2 confirmed the park is open. The one-acre site used to be a National Tire and Battery and, before that, sat on ground tied to the old Coca-Cola Bottling Works plant. It now has a multipurpose court for basketball and futsal, outdoor fitness equipment, ping pong, cornhole and bocce, a nature-play playground, a community plaza, and separate dog runs for large and small dogs.

The park's own page lists no hours. Montgomery Parks' general dog-park rules set dawn-to-dusk hours when nothing else is posted. Those rules also cap each handler at three dogs and require handlers to keep a leash within reach. In late October, dusk comes early.

Dacha Beer Garden, across the street in the former Denizens space, could give that corner an evening anchor. Bethesda Magazine's September 11 update still had no opening timeline. Momiji Sushi & Izakaya at 1201 Fidler Lane, in the 1942 building Cubano's used for more than two decades, was hiring in mid-September. It had filed for its use-and-occupancy permit, but it has no posted opening date. Shah's, which typically stays open late at its other area locations, is the only newcomer so far built for after dark.

October evenings depend on the calendar

With no new restaurants opening for dinner, downtown's evenings this month come from scheduled events, and most of them are on or near Colesville Road:

  1. Through October 22: Noir City DC at AFI Silver. The series includes 35mm screenings of Blues in the Night, Nocturne and The Crimson Canary. Halloween titles and special screenings follow it on the late-October calendar.
  2. Saturday, October 24: the Silver Spring Zombie Walk. Walkers gather at Quarry House Tavern at 7 p.m. and step off from Ellsworth Square at 9. AFI's lineup that night includes The Evil Dead, Train to Busan and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, according to MoCo Show.
  3. Sunday, October 25: Fall-O-Ween at Veterans Plaza. It runs noon to 5 p.m. with free admission, craft vendors, and costume parades for kids and pets, per Visit Montgomery.
  4. Saturday, November 21: the Thanksgiving Parade. It steps off at 10 a.m. from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and heads down Georgia Avenue.

Fall-O-Ween ends at 5 p.m., and the parade starts in the morning. That leaves AFI as the one downtown institution reliably programming the hours after dark this season.

Wayne Avenue closes after dark too

The Purple Line work that will shape late-night trips also runs overnight. The Purple Line project's update page lists these closures:

  • October 25 to November 6: Wayne Avenue closed overnight from Dale Drive to Manchester Road, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • November 8 to 20: two closures of about a week each on Wayne Avenue, first Fenton Street to Cedar Street and then Cedar Street to Dale Drive. Exact dates for each stage have not been posted.
  • About November 22 to December 1: the Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street intersection closed nightly, 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., with resident and pedestrian access maintained.

The intersection closure was originally planned for October. Source of the Spring reported its delay to late November, and the project warns that weather could move dates again. The line itself is over 90 percent complete with all track installed. Service is expected in winter 2027, the contractual date is December 30, 2027, and an opening as late as April 2028 is still possible while safety testing continues. The Spring Street Bridge was substantially complete as of October 11, and no reopening date has been set.
