On the afternoon of June 30, 2026, two announcements landed on Mount Vernon Avenue within hours of each other. Neighborhood Restaurant Group said it would open a record store at 2016 Mount Vernon Ave. this August, with Evening Star Café chef Nathan Anda and beverage director Greg Engert joining founder Michael Babin on the project. The same day, Crooked Beat Records announced it would reopen at 2101B, 128 feet away.
Two record stores. Same block. Same Tuesday.
If you already live in Del Ray, that Tuesday is the summer in miniature. The new arrivals on the Avenue this year are almost all coming from operators who already trade a few doors down or already live in the neighborhood. That is the through line worth paying attention to, because it changes what an ordinary weekday looks like more than any single opening would.
The pattern behind this summer's openings
Start with Little Birdie. Matt Sloan and Eric Brannon, the team behind Matt & Tony's All Day Kitchen + Bar at 1501 Mount Vernon Avenue, took the space at 1504B directly across the street. It was the former Benny DiForza's Pizza, which opened in February 2024 and closed the following October. They signed the lease at the end of 2025, renovated through the spring, and cut the ribbon in late June.
The address matters. So does the résumé. Sloan is a former managing partner of Alexandria Restaurant Partners, which owns The Majestic, Mia's Italian Kitchen, and Ada's on the River. Matt & Tony's is currently a 2026 RAMMY finalist for Best Brunch, one of the region's highest restaurant honors. This is not an outside operator testing the market. It is a second act happening at the same intersection.
The record stores follow the same logic. NRG runs Evening Star Café at 2000 Mount Vernon Ave., which now trades as Hi/Fi Tex-Mex BBQ with a beer garden hosting Songwriter Sessions and free weekend shows. Their new shop sits 16 doors up. Crooked Beat is a return, taking a Mount Vernon Avenue address the previous tenant kept warm.
Even the rebrands are neighbor moves. Del Ray Pizzeria became Del Ray Public House in March 2026, keeping the same 1908 building and now running country fried steak Tuesdays and Friday karaoke. Pak Soii Izakaya opened in October 2025, adding Japanese small plates a few blocks north.
The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership describes Del Ray as a community with a strong push to support local and independently owned small businesses. What changed this summer is the density and the timing.
Five separate moves inside a single season. Four of them from operators already on the Avenue or a short drive away.
What this actually does to your week
The standing calendar has been the Del Ray backbone for years. Second Saturday anchors the month, starting at the Del Ray Farmers' Market at Pat Miller Neighborhood Square and continuing through the Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market, which Domino magazine named the best flea market in the state.
Weekends were never the problem. Weekdays were.

The new anchors do not replace anything. They fill the flat middle of the week. If your household routine has always been Saturday morning market plus one Friday dinner out, you now have three or four weekday reasons to walk the Avenue that did not exist last August.
The standing calendar, refreshed
First Thursday is back, and it is under new management. The Del Ray Citizens Association has taken over organizing duties from the Del Ray Business Association, which founded and produced the event for nearly three decades. The DRBA's Lauren Fisher publicly welcomed the handoff. The season runs May through September at Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, 5 to 8 p.m., free.
The July 2 theme was America 250, sponsored by the Jen Walker Team. Del Ray is leaning into the national anniversary the way it leans into everything else, at neighborhood scale and on foot.
The biggest single date on the summer calendar is Saturday, August 15, from 12:30 to 6 p.m.: the 6th Annual Bands & Brews Summer Bar Crawl, benefiting the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, which supports more than 400 Alexandria City High School graduates a year. The lineup runs the length of the Avenue and reads like a Del Ray directory: Northside10, Hops N Shine, Los Tios, Spice Kraft, Piece Out Del Ray, Cheesetique, Pork Barrel BBQ, St. Elmo's Coffee Pub, Market to Market, Del Ray Public House, Gustave's Boulangerie, Evening Star Cafe (Hi/Fi), Pak Soii Izakaya, Rosemarino D'Italia, Junction Bakery, The Garden Del Ray, Little Birdie, Matt & Tony's, Bella Napoli, and Lena's Wood-Fired Pizza & Tap. Costume contest at Pat Miller Square at 5:30 p.m. Adults on the crawl, families welcome at the main stage.
A month earlier, on July 11 and 12, the Del Ray Artisans Summer Art Market runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside the gallery at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue. It lands on Second Saturday weekend, which means the Farmers' Market and Vintage & Flea are already pulling foot traffic to the same stretch.
Add the Del Ray Halloween Parade, Art on the Avenue, and the winter Tree and Menorah Lighting later in the year, and the calendar reads less like a list of events and more like a rhythm the neighborhood already knows how to walk to.
Where to take out-of-town guests this month
A short version, for the visitor who lands on a Friday afternoon and leaves Sunday night.
- Friday evening: Live music from local DMV artists at Hops N Shine, or a guided tasting at Planet Wine. Erin Dudley, the wine director there, has been running themed evenings like "In the Family: Wineries Passed Down From Fathers." Dinner at Del Ray Café, in a refurbished 1925 house at 205 East Howell Avenue, from the former La Bergerie team.
- Saturday morning: Farmers' Market at Pat Miller Square, then brunch at Matt & Tony's or across the street at Little Birdie. Brannon has said the sourcing includes Chesapeake oysters, Shlagel Farms produce, and bread baked in Virginia.
- Saturday night: A show at The Birchmere at 3701 Mt Vernon Ave. Recent runs have included Lez Zeppelin's 50th Anniversary Song Remains the Same and Vincent Ingala. If a show does not fit the plan, Hi/Fi's beer garden at 2000 Mt Vernon Ave. has free Saturday evening singer-songwriter sets.
- Sunday: Coffee at St. Elmo's, a walk to the Del Ray Artisans gallery, and a slow pass at whichever record store is open by then.
None of that is theoretical. All of it is booked, printed on the community calendar, or already trading.
The insider read
Del Ray has long described itself as small-business-first. That framing has been true for years. What is genuinely new this summer is who is opening what, and where. When the same restaurant group runs the beer garden, opens a chicken restaurant across the street, and opens a record store 16 doors up, the Avenue stops being a collection of independent addresses and starts behaving like a single, curated block.
For a homeowner, that has a quiet second-order effect. Foot traffic on Tuesday nights is different from foot traffic only on Saturday mornings. Curb life on the Avenue is one of the reasons people buy on the streets that feed into it. This summer is the season that reset the baseline.
